Stretch Shortening Cycle (Ssc)
The Stretch-Shortening Cycle (SSC) is the physiological foundation of plyometric power in modern tennis. By coupling an active eccentric pre-stretch with an explosive concentric contraction, the musculoskeletal system harvests stored elastic strain energy and spinal reflex recruitment to amplify stroke speed and court movement.
The Reactive Split-Step SSC
Agility on a tennis court is fundamentally an expression of lower-extremity SSC efficiency. During the split-step, the athlete drops from an airborne hop to absorb court contact through the metatarsal heads. The Achilles tendon and plantar aponeurosis act as mechanical springs, absorbing deceleration forces and immediately rebounding into multi-directional sprints with contact times under 180 ms.
