Internal Shoulder Rotation (ISR)—the rapid medial rotation of the upper arm bone (humerus) toward the midline of the body—is the single largest biological generator of racket head velocity in the modern tennis serve and overhead, and plays a vital role in modern topspin groundstrokes.
Footwork as the Rotational Trigger for ISR
Internal Shoulder Rotation cannot occur efficiently without stable footwork. High-speed angular acceleration at the shoulder joint creates substantial rotational reaction moments through the torso and down into the pelvis. If the lower body is sliding or unanchored, this reaction torque spins the athlete's base out of control, causing loss of balance and erratic shot trajectories.
Aggressive footwork positions the center of mass with precision, establishing a firm base of support. Decisive planting of the lead foot arrests linear travel, converting ground reaction force into trunk rotation, which subsequently slingshots the hitting arm into rapid internal rotation.
