Ground Reaction Force (Grf)
Ground Reaction Force (GRF) is the reactive force exerted by the playing surface against an athlete's body in accordance with Newton's Third Law of Motion. In modern tennis, GRF represents the primary energetic fountainhead for every dynamic stroke, serving as the first link in the biomechanical kinetic chain.
GRF as the Engine of Tennis Locomotion
Every movement on a tennis court—from the initial explosive crossover step to high-speed hard-court deceleration—is governed by Newton's laws of motion via Ground Reaction Forces. An athlete cannot change direction, accelerate, or stop without exerting force into the court surface. High-performance tennis players experience repetitive horizontal and vertical ground reaction forces ranging from 2.0 to 4.5 times body weight during aggressive baseline change-of-direction maneuvers.
Linear speed is dictated by horizontal anterior-posterior GRF impulse ($J = \int F dt$), whereas change of direction requires immense mediolateral braking GRF. The transition from sprint to deceleration involves eccentric loading of the quadriceps, gluteus medius, and calf complex, dissipating massive kinetic energy in fractions of a second.
The Split-Step Elastic Trigger
The universal foundation of tennis footwork is the split-step, executed approximately 30–50 ms before the opponent makes contact. By hopping lightly (2–5 cm off the court) and landing with feet wider than shoulder width, the player utilizes the ground reaction force of landing to pre-stretch the elastic components of the lower limbs. This triggers the stretch reflex (muscle spindles in the calf and quads), allowing immediate, explosive push-off in any direction with minimal ground contact time (< 200 ms).

Elite players maintain high ankle stiffness during loading. An unyielding ankle structure prevents energy loss through unwanted collapse, ensuring that every Newton of force generated by the hip and thigh is transmitted directly into the ground and converted into rapid displacement across the court surface.

- "Quiet Feet, Loud Ground": Move lightly across the court, but exert intense, decisive force into the court during plants and direction changes.
- Multi-Directional Cone Bounds: High-intensity deceleration drills sprinting to an outside cone, absorbing momentum on the outside leg in a single plant step, and exploding back to the center.
