Internal Shoulder Rotation (Isr)
Internal Shoulder Rotation (ISR)—the rapid medial rotation of the upper arm bone (humerus) toward the midline of the body—is the single largest biological generator of racket head velocity in the modern tennis serve and overhead, and plays a vital role in modern topspin groundstrokes.
ISR Suppression: The Secret to Crisp Volleys
While the serve and forehand actively exploit maximum Internal Shoulder Rotation, the volley requires the exact opposite: active suppression and isometric stabilization of ISR. One of the most destructive mechanical flaws among intermediate tennis players is allowing the shoulder to internally rotate during the volley forward motion.
When a player internally rotates the shoulder on a volley, the elbow flares outward, the wrist breaks, and the racket face violently snaps shut (the "swat" or "wrist slap"). At contact velocities exceeding 70–80 mph from the opponent, a snapping racket face creates catastrophic instability and erratic errors.
Scapular Retraction & Isometric Stability
Elite volleyers (such as Roger Federer, John McEnroe, and Stefan Edberg) maintain the hitting humerus in slight external rotation with the scapula anchored against the ribcage. The rotator cuff contracts isometrically to lock the glenohumeral joint, allowing the entire upper torso and arm to move forward as a single, rigid kinetic unit ("Block and Stick").
