Stretch Shortening Cycle (Ssc)

The Stretch-Shortening Cycle (SSC) is the physiological foundation of plyometric power in modern tennis. By coupling an active eccentric pre-stretch with an explosive concentric contraction, the musculoskeletal system harvests stored elastic strain energy and spinal reflex recruitment to amplify stroke speed and court movement.

Proprioceptive Spindle Reflexes Under Stress

The neurological driver of the SSC is the monosynaptic myotatic reflex mediated by Type Ia muscle spindle fibers. High sympathetic arousal and stress elevate gamma-motoneuron discharge, which can cause muscle stiffness (rigidity) and impair the fluid stretch-recoil rhythm. Deep breathing and rhythmic movement normalize CNS muscle spindle gain.
