Internal Shoulder Rotation (Isr)
Internal Shoulder Rotation (ISR)—the rapid medial rotation of the upper arm bone (humerus) toward the midline of the body—is the single largest biological generator of racket head velocity in the modern tennis serve and overhead, and plays a vital role in modern topspin groundstrokes.
Grip Bevel Influence on ISR Expression
The grip dictates the biomechanical freedom of the glenohumeral joint. On serves, the Continental grip (Bevel 2) places the forearm in natural neutral alignment during the trophy position, unlocking up to 90° of available internal shoulder rotation range of motion through the hitting window.
If an amateur uses an Eastern or Semi-Western grip to serve, the wrist is pre-aligned flat to the ball, which physically blocks internal shoulder rotation and forces the player to push the ball with elbow extension, drastically reducing velocity and stressing the medial collateral ligament.
