Internal Shoulder Rotation (Isr)
Internal Shoulder Rotation (ISR)—the rapid medial rotation of the upper arm bone (humerus) toward the midline of the body—is the single largest biological generator of racket head velocity in the modern tennis serve and overhead, and plays a vital role in modern topspin groundstrokes.
ISR in the Modern Windshield Wiper Forehand
On the modern forehand—pioneered by Sergi Bruguera and perfected by Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz—Internal Shoulder Rotation serves as the rotational accelerant for the windshield wiper finish. As the racket accelerates through the forward swing with the wrist laid back in extension, the elbow slightly flexes and the humerus internally rotates rapidly across the chest.
This internal rotation turns the forearm and racket frame over like a car windshield wiper blade, brushing sharply up and across the back-outside of the ball. This mechanics produces exceptional topspin rates (3,200+ RPM) while pulling the racket down and across the non-dominant shoulder or ribcage without stalling the follow-through.
Kinetic Chain Coupling with Torso Rotation
ISR must not operate in isolation. In high-level ATP forehands, internal shoulder rotation is preceded by explosive pelvic rotation and thoracic uncoiling. The chest opens toward the net while the hitting arm lags behind, creating an elastic pre-stretch across the pectoralis major and anterior deltoid. When the torso decelerates just prior to contact, the stored elastic torque whips the arm forward via rapid ISR.
Common Flaws & Kinetic Leaks
- Forced Early Wiper: Internally rotating the shoulder before the ball contact point, resulting in shanked balls off the top edge of the frame.
- Elevated Scapular Hitching: Shrugging the trapezius during ISR, which pinches the supraspinatus tendon against the acromion process, causing chronic shoulder impingement.
