Stretch Shortening Cycle (Ssc)
The Stretch-Shortening Cycle (SSC) is the physiological foundation of plyometric power in modern tennis. By coupling an active eccentric pre-stretch with an explosive concentric contraction, the musculoskeletal system harvests stored elastic strain energy and spinal reflex recruitment to amplify stroke speed and court movement.
SSC and Wrist/Racket Lag in the Forehand
In modern ATP forehands (Sinner, Alcaraz), the Stretch-Shortening Cycle is the mechanical secret behind effortless "easy power." During the forward drive of the hips and torso, the racket head lags behind the hand in the slot position (the "Pat the Dog" transition).
This lag places the wrist flexors (flexor carpi radialis and ulnaris) and anterior shoulder rotators under acute eccentric tension. In milliseconds, the elastic tendons snap back, whipping the racket face into and through the hitting window without requiring conscious forearm squeezing.
