High Volley Termination — Technical Reference
Any time a ball comes to you above net height while you're at the net, gravity is working for you, not against you — and this is your model for converting that opportunity into a won point, using a downward-angled contact path and aggressive shoulder rotation to drive the ball into your opponent's court with no chance of recovery. Think of it as the net-play equivalent of an overhead smash.
The Mechanics
Your contact point sits slightly higher and further in front of your body than a standard volley — that's what maximizes the downward angle available to you. From there, your racket moves on an aggressive downward path after contact, which clears the net safely while sending the ball descending sharply into the court, cutting your opponent's reaction time down to almost nothing. Your dominant shoulder rotates inward aggressively, snapping the racket face downward — the same motion your serve uses in its final acceleration phase. And your force vector points aggressively downward, letting gravity do real work for you instead of fighting it.
Master this and every high ball becomes a converted point — physics and aggressive geometry doing the work of leaving your opponent no way back into it.

Your low volley — below knee height — is explicitly a defensive shot: deep knee flexion and a soft hand to guide the ball back deep and neutralize, not attack. Don't confuse the two mindsets.
The Overhead Has Evolved
The overhead smash — the extreme version of this shot — looks different than it used to. Where the 2000s style favored a scissor-kick and careful placement with high net clearance for safety, today's version is a power-first, low-clearance weapon, built on the same explosive vertical jump your serve uses to generate maximum downward force.
Where You'll See It Break Down
Letting contact happen too late — the ball already past your body — kills your downward angle entirely; you end up swinging up at a ball that's already dropped. Snapping with your arm alone, without full shoulder rotation, cuts your power dramatically — you need the whole shoulder snap to generate real racket speed at the top. And hesitating, treating a genuinely high, attackable ball as uncertain, waiting or adjusting instead of committing, wastes the one advantage gravity was giving you.
