The Stretch-Shortening Cycle (SSC) is the physiological foundation of plyometric power in modern tennis. By coupling an active eccentric pre-stretch with an explosive concentric contraction, the musculoskeletal system harvests stored elastic strain energy and spinal reflex recruitment to amplify stroke speed and court movement.
SSC Dynamics in the Serve Motion
In the high-performance serve, the Stretch-Shortening Cycle occurs simultaneously across two major biomechanical sectors:
- Lower-Body Vertical Launch: During the rockback to trophy transition, the server sinks into knee flexion (~110°), eccentrically stretching the quadriceps tendons and gluteus complex. Immediate rebound within 120 ms converts this into vertical acceleration of the center of mass.
- Upper-Body Shoulder Sling: As the server launches upward, inertia holds the racket head back, causing the deep racket drop (scratch position). This violently pre-stretches the anterior shoulder wall (subscapularis and pectoralis major) to maximum physiological length.
