Once the unit turn is established, the forward swing into the ball separates a mediocre float slice from a penetrating, skid slice that stays low off the court surface.

The Inside-Out Path & Carving Trajectory

At 240 frames per second, Jeff Counts's (Hi-Tech Tennis) high-speed video reveals that the racket head does not chop straight down. Instead, it follows a gentle, descending arc that levels out through the contact zone:

  • Pulling the Butt Cap: The forward motion begins by pulling the butt cap forward, leading the stroke toward the incoming contact point while the racket head lags behind.
  • Continental Grip Stability: Held with a strict Continental grip (Bevel 2), the racket face remains slightly open (typically 10 to 15 degrees) at impact, producing backspin without causing the ball to pop upward.
  • Forward Extension: Rather than abruptly slicing downward and stopping, the hitting arm extends smoothly forward along the target line. The non-hitting arm simultaneously drives backward in a counter-balancing "wingspread" motion, locking the shoulders sideways and keeping the torso stable.

This biomechanical counter-balance allows the player to transfer linear momentum through contact, producing a heavy, skidding slice with minimal bounce and maximum court penetration.
