Continental Grip Anatomy — Technical Reference
Here's the thing I want you to understand about Continental grip: it's not really a grip preference. It's an engineering decision your hand makes for you, whether you realize it or not — and once you see why, you'll never think of "holding the racket on its side" the same way again.
Why Your Bones Do the Work Instead of Your Muscles
When the heel of your hand sits on bevel 2, something specific happens anatomically: the two long bones of your forearm — the radius and ulna — line up directly behind the impact zone. You've built yourself a skeletal buttress against the ball's momentum before you've even swung.
Now picture the opposite. In a Western grip, your palm sits behind or underneath the handle. A 90 mph passing shot comes in, and the force drives straight into the fleshy part of your palm — no bone behind it. Your racket face behaves like a trampoline, and the ball fires off unpredictably. Your small wrist muscles are left doing a stabilizing job that only bone can reliably handle at that kind of speed. That's not a technique flaw you can drill away — it's a structural mismatch.
The "V" Tells You Everything
Set your hand in Continental and look at the V formed between your thumb and index finger — it should point toward your non-dominant shoulder. That's not decorative. It keeps your racket head up and slightly ahead of your face, right in your natural field of vision, and it pre-positions your wrist for the ulnar deviation you need — what I sometimes call the L-shape lock. In Eastern grip, getting your wrist into that position takes real effort, fighting the anatomy. In Continental, it's just where your wrist wants to go anyway.
The Low Volley Problem
Here's where Western grip really shows its limits: on a shoelace-height ball. In Eastern or Western forehand grip, your radius bone physically restricts how far you can open the strings. To get under that low ball, you end up breaking your wrist — and you know what that produces. A floated, weak return. Continental lets the racket dig under the ball while your wrist stays firm in that ulnar deviation position, so your legs can do the lifting while the racket provides the underspin for control. Try opening your face that far in Western grip without breaking your wrist — you can't, not reliably.
Why Backhand Volleys on Body Shots Feel Easier
If a ball's coming right at your body, the forehand volley forces your elbow out and away — breaking your protective shape and opening a gap right where you don't want one. The backhand volley solves this naturally: your hitting elbow points toward the net, and you can cover your entire torso, hip to opposite shoulder, with only small wrist and forearm adjustments. That's Continental grip's structure doing the protecting for you.
The Trigger Finger Detail
One more thing worth building into your grip: don't bunch your fingers tightly together. Elite volleyers spread the index finger slightly higher up the handle, leaving about an inch of gap between it and the middle finger. That gap acts as a stabilizing strut — it keeps the racket head from twisting backward when a heavy passing shot tries to torque it out of your hand.
