Stretch Shortening Cycle (Ssc)
The Stretch-Shortening Cycle (SSC) is the physiological foundation of plyometric power in modern tennis. By coupling an active eccentric pre-stretch with an explosive concentric contraction, the musculoskeletal system harvests stored elastic strain energy and spinal reflex recruitment to amplify stroke speed and court movement.
SSC in the Backhand Drive
In the two-handed backhand (2HBH), the non-dominant side functions through a mirrored forehand SSC, loading the non-dominant hip and shoulder rotators before uncoiling. In the one-handed backhand (1HBH), the posterior shoulder girdle (rhomboids, posterior deltoid, and middle trapezius) undergoes an intense eccentric pre-stretch during the coiling unit turn, followed by explosive horizontal abduction through impact.
