Here's the thing I want you to understand about grip tension: it's not really a technical detail. It's a readout of your nervous system, live, in real time. How tight you're holding the racket tells me - and should tell you - whether your body is calm and fluid or bracing against something.
What "Correct" Actually Looks Like Moment to Moment
Grip pressure isn't one number - it should be shifting constantly through the point, on a scale of 1 to 10:

How a Tight Grip Steals Your Power
Your hand is the last link in the kinetic chain - the final handoff point before all that rotational energy from your hips and trunk reaches the ball. Squeeze too hard, and here's what happens, step by step: your forearm goes rigid. A rigid forearm won't let your wrist release passively the way it needs to for that final whip through the ball. Without that passive snap, your racket head never gets the acceleration it's supposed to have through contact. The result: the stroke feels like you're working hard, but it doesn't actually produce the pace you'd expect for that effort.
It doesn't stop at your wrist, either. Tension travels up the chain - a clamped grip tightens your forearm, which restricts your shoulder, which prevents full rotation, which kills your finish. The whole chain degrades starting from your hand and working inward.
The Tell: What I Call a Neurological Leak
Any time your grip pressure creeps above a 4 in your ready position - and this is almost always adrenaline talking, not a conscious decision - that's what I call a neurological leak. The energy that should be reserved for actually hitting the ball gets spent instead on bracing for a threat that isn't really there. You'll recognize it when it happens: stiff hands at net, no touch left on drop shots or half-volleys, flat groundstrokes that have lost their topspin because the face can't release low-to-high anymore, even a drop in serve speed with no change in your mechanics.
Scale the Squeeze to the Ball, Not to Your Nerves
Here's the nuance a lot of players miss: a faster incoming ball genuinely does need a firmer pulse. Against a 100 mph passing shot at net, you need something close to a 9 to keep the face from flopping open on contact. Against a soft ball, a 5 or 6 is plenty. The mistake isn't squeezing hard on the fast ball - it's holding that 9 before contact, in your ready position or your approach, instead of producing it in that split second when the ball actually arrives.
When It Goes Wrong Under Pressure
There's a name for the worst version of this: your amygdala floods your system with adrenaline under match pressure, your resting muscle tone climbs everywhere, your grip jumps from that healthy 3-4 up to 7 or higher - and it just sits there, in your ready position, before you've even swung. Your forearm tightens, your shoulder locks up, and you end up relying on pure muscle instead of the elastic stretch-and-release your body's built for. The stroke feels heavy and effortful even though you're trying hard. You can actually hear the difference - a clean stroke has a deep, resonant sound at contact; this version sounds thin and slappy, because it's just your arm's mass making contact, not your whole body's momentum.
The Net Is Where This Gets Tested Hardest
At the baseline, you've got a whole rally to manage your nerves. At net, you've got a fraction of a second, the ball's coming fast, and the opponent's right there - it's a genuinely high-arousal environment, and your grip tension will show it if you're not deliberate about resetting between every single volley.
