The punch volley is the primary weapon for closing out points at the net. It converts incoming ball energy into decisive directional control with minimal margin for error.

Biomechanical Checkpoints

  • The Short Punch Motion: Rather than taking a full stroke, the hitting arm pushes forward 6 to 12 inches through contact, maintaining a firm wrist and stable racket face angle.
  • Under-Spin Generation: A slight high-to-low trajectory (a 5-to-10-degree descent) creates crisp under-spin, ensuring the ball dips over the net and stays low off the bounce.
  • Forward Step & Weight Transfer: Stepping forward onto the opposite foot (stepping with the left foot on a forehand volley for a right-hander) transfers core body weight directly into the contact zone, imparting speed without reckless arm swinging.
